The beavers thick, warm pelt lured the first Europeans to the inner continent of North America for the lucrative fur trade. A study near Grand Portage is checking on the health of a local beaver colony. http://www.wdse.org/vn.htm

A colony of robust water striders on a rock pool by the side of Gauthier Creek. Grooves on the microscopic hairs on their legs trap air, allowing them to float on thousands of tiny air cushions. www.livescience.com/animals/041103_water_strider.html Predators with piercing and sucking mouths, they feed on live and dead insects.
