water striders 4-10-2010
A colony of robust water striders on a rock pool by the side of Gauthier Creek. Grooves on the microscopic hairs on their legs trap air, allowing them to float on thousands of tiny air cushions. www.livescience.com/animals/041103_water_strider.html Predators with piercing and sucking mouths, they feed on live and dead insects.
Boundary Waters Black Backed Woodpecker
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is a quiet place in the winter. It is easy to hear the tap, tap, tapping of this Black Backed Woodpecker while out on a snowshoe trek. There are numerous trails on the Gunflint Trail to look and listen for different kinds of birds. There's great birding near Voyageur Canoe Outfitters at the end of the Trail where I live.
