  • A Boundary Waters Business - Mike and Sue Prom

Behind many businesses you will find a married couple juggling kids, house, and business. Even on the edge of the Boundary Waters, at the end of the Gunflint Trail, overlooking Saganaga Lake you will find this balancing act to be true. Mike and Sue Prom own and operate Voyageur Canoe Outfitters and have been doing that for nearly 20 years now. Throw in two kids, a dog, a seasonal staff, the occasional forest fire, winters, and lots of visitors and things get interesting. Thankfully blueberries, the off-season and some friendly moose are also in the mix. It all adds up to make owning and operating a Boundary Waters resort and outfitting business a very interesting lifestyle.

  • Gunflint Trail Moose Licking Salt off of the Road

We may not have open water yet for fishing, but we sure do have whacky spring behavior from our four-legged residents! Thanks Proms for sharing this video! It is spring in the Boundary Waters and on the Gunflint Trail. With the snow and ice gone the Gunflint Trail moose love to lick the salt off of the road. This moose is quite content to lie down and lick the road. Soon wilderness canoe travelers will be heading to the BWCA and there will be cars on the road, but until then the moose will enjoy its salt lick.

  • Boundary Waters Black Backed Woodpecker

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is a quiet place in the winter. It is easy to hear the tap, tap, tapping of this Black Backed Woodpecker while out on a snowshoe trek. There are numerous trails on the Gunflint Trail to look and listen for different kinds of birds. There's great birding near Voyageur Canoe Outfitters at the end of the Trail where I live.
